Why Olympics Should be hosted by Tamil Nadu?

First, Olympics are not hosted by country or state. It is hosted by cities like Tokyo, Athens, London etc. India has shown an interest to participate in the bidding for the 2032 Olympics. Tamil Nadu should be spearheading to host it.

Because we are one of the people who have an ancient tradition. Our history dates back to much older than Olympics. We can use Olympics to say it louder to the entire world as soft power diplomacy.

Other Linguistic people like English, France, Japanese, Koreans who have similar populations are performing well in Olympics.

If a City has to be chosen to be in Tamil Nadu, there can be three cities that can host an Olympics:

3. Thiruchi: For its history as Imperial Chola’s Capital who captured Indonesia, Sri Lanka etc.

2. Chennai: Capital of Tamil Nadu and ancient capital of Pallavas which had trade relations with the Chinese empires and Khmer empires.

1.Madurai: Ancient Capital of Pandian Kingdom and city where Sangam was held.

What do Critics say?

Critics have always pointed to the economics of the Olympics which makes the Host City sink in the pile of debt after the Olympics.

The Stadium are useless to none in most of the cities. Even the maintenance cost of the Stadium is huge.

Environment concerns and the Human Rights movement have stopped the bidding of several cities.

Even over budgeting would be another factor that adds to the fears of the host city.

Alternate Perspective:

1. Vision: New Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has said to make Tamil Nadu a Trillion Dollar Economy by 2030. We can leverage sports and tourism can for achieving this vision
2. Capacity Building: Chennai has become an IT corridor due to its Capacity building measures. Many Textile businesses have started around the Tiruppur district. Coimbatore has become an MSME hub for its industrialisation. We can have a dedicated ‘Sports Village’.
3. Combined Approach: There are many sporting events like Asian Games, Common Wealth Games and Local sporting events like Khelo India. We can make our sportsperson have a medal in every game. (1 Medal for Each game)
4. Long Time Commitment: All these need a lot of capital over a long time of at least 10 years on par with Rhein Ruhr city of Germany (that is also participating for the bid of 2032 Olympics) needs a political will to do it.

But this capital will pay a heavy return on investment in Human Development Index and sustained improvement of the spirit of the people like how TNPL, IPL, ISL and other franchises have improved the sports in TN and India.
